WERTHEIM NWR’S OAK TRAIL

  • 340 Smith Road Shirley, New York, 11967 United States (map)

SUN NOV 29 – WERTHEIM NWR’S OAK TRAIL:

12:00 to 1:30 – 2.6 mi. (Wertheim’s website) to 3.2 mi. (All Trails website) – moderate pace – flat. Registration required: call or email Jane 631-689-1568 or jfasullo2@gmail.com

Meet by the Welcome Center, 340 Smith Road, ~ ¼ mile south of Montauk Hwy. From the center, walk to and over the bridge to the White Oak trail. Walking through the upland forests of oak and pitch pine, note the maintained open area and find out why so many of the pines are dead. Returning along the river’s edge, stop at one or more of the wildlife viewing platforms. See if you can spot the duck blind. Near the Welcome Center, you can access the only east side viewing platform. It’s also where the 3.3 mile, out-and-back Black Tupelo trail starts. The Welcome Center is not open Sundays but there are “pit toilets” by the head of the White Oak trail. Any rain cancels this event.
