TERRELL RIVER, CENTER MORICHES

3 + miles – flat - moderate pace with some stops. Reservations required: Call Jane 631-689-1568. This 263-acre site borders the estuary where Terrell River meets Moriches Bay, creating a nursery for game fish and crustaceans. The narrow trail beginning opens to a wide mature forest and terminates at a slender beach along beautiful Moriches Bay. In the woods we will likely see or hear sparrows and chickadees - at the beach, various waterbirds. At one of the Artesian springs, hear how they are formed and what makes them run.  The Moriches Bay Audubon Society acts as steward for this county park. If there is no room in the small parking area, park across the street at Kalers Pond Town Park. Kalers Pond Park restrooms may not be open. On Kalers Pond, there should be a nice variety of waterfowl. Address: 20 Main Street, Center Moriches. Rain, wet snow, or more than 5 inches of snow on the ground cancels this event. Hike end time is approximate.
